MoYu (MoYu Cube / 魔域文化) is one of the key Chinese manufacturers of speedcubes and twisty puzzles. The brand appeared in the early 2010s as a “premium” line of the company YongJun (YJ) and quickly became a standard for competitive 3×3 cubes and big NxN.
Many world records were set on MoYu cubes – for example, the legendary 3.47 seconds by Yusheng Du was done on a MoYu Weilong GTS2M.
History and reputation
Start as YJ’s “top line”
MoYu was initially positioned as a more high-tech brand on top of YongJun’s mass-market cubes.
The AoLong era
The AoLong series made MoYu one of the main names in speedcubing – many top competitors of that time switched to AoLong as the “new 3×3 standard”.
WeiLong and the WR era
The WeiLong / WeiLong GTS / GTS2 / WR / WRM line cemented MoYu’s flagship status; it was the WeiLong GTS2M that became the cube for the 3.47 world record.
Entry into the budget segment
The MoFang JiaoShi / Cubing Classroom / MeiLong / RS lines made good speedcubes accessible for beginners – RS3M 2020 is still often called one of the best budget magnetic 3×3 cubes.
Expanding the range
MoYu consistently releases not only 3×3, but the full spectrum of WCA puzzles (2×2–7×7, Pyraminx, Skewb, Megaminx, Square-1, Clock), as well as shape-mods, big cubes and unusual puzzles.
The brand’s reputation is that of a “workhorse of speedcubing”: many models, wide price range, and stable quality in the mid and high segments.
Main lines and specialization
Flagship speedcubes
WeiLong series (3×3)
The main “showcase” of the brand: generations GTS, GTS2, WR, WR M, Super / GuHong / RS updates etc. These cubes are aimed at advanced and competitive speedcubers.
Key features:
- high speed and strong corner-cutting;
- complex adjustment systems (dual-adjust, interchangeable cores, various magnet setups);
- versions with magnetic core, MagLev, etc. in the latest generations.
Flagship big cubes
The AoSu (4×4), AoChuang (5×5), AoShi (6×6), AoFu (7×7) series and their updates were for many years the standard for serious big NxN solving. Competition has grown, but MoYu is still one of the main players.
Budget and learning
MoFang JiaoShi / Cubing Classroom / MeiLong / RS lines
These are cubes for beginners and “reasonable budget” users:
- simple but reliable construction;
- mostly magnetic versions at affordable prices;
- focus on teaching kids and school students (often sold as 2×2–5×5 sets plus learning materials).
Such models work great for shops, schools, clubs and as a first “proper” cube.
Other directions
- Non-standard puzzles: megaminx, pyraminx, skewb, square-1, clock, mirror cubes, fancy mods.
- Big and collectible cubes: 8×8+, unusual shapes and color schemes – for collectors and enthusiasts.
Who MoYu is mainly for
- Beginners – thanks to the RS / MeiLong / MoFang JiaoShi budget series: easy maintenance, predictable behavior, price that’s “not scary to start with”.
- Advanced and competitive cubers – thanks to WeiLong and flagship NxN: modern solutions, support for high TPS, many adjustment options.
- Collectors – thanks to a wide range of sizes, formats, color schemes and unusual puzzles.
If GAN is often seen as “expensive premium with lots of tech”, MoYu is more like a wide spectrum from affordable to flagship, with a good price-to-performance ratio.
Successful and controversial models
Most famous and successful
Examples (not tied to specific shop listings):
- AoLong – one of the first truly competitive MoYu 3×3 flagships.
- WeiLong GTS / GTS2 / WR / WRM / Super – the flagship line used for world records and by many top cubers.
- RS3M (2020 and later versions) – one of the most popular budget magnetic 3×3 cubes in the world: inexpensive, but very “speedcube-like”.
Controversial points
- Batch variance
Some early batches had noticeable variation in factory lube and setup – two copies of the same model could feel slightly different until you retuned them. - Confusing naming
Many overlapping series (Weilong / GuHong / RS / MeiLong / MS etc.) can make choice harder for beginners – without explanation it’s not obvious which is a flagship and which is budget.
Even so, overall MoYu remains a brand that is often recommended by default – from your first magnetic cube to an advanced flagship.
Interesting facts
- Record connection: the MoYu WeiLong GTS2M was officially recorded as the cube of the 3×3 single world record 3.47 s.
- Strong impact on the market: MoYu’s budget lines noticeably raised the bar for “cheap” cubes – now people expect even an inexpensive cube to turn well and have magnets.
- Own “ecosystem”: like other major brands, MoYu develops not only cubes, but also accessories (mats, timers, lubricants) and educational lines for children.
