Monster Go Skewb — beginner-friendly non-magnetic skewb from the creators of GAN
Monster Go Skewb is an entry-level skewb from the Monster Go sub-brand (by GAN).
Instead of magnets, it uses a system of small plastic bumps and grooves (“snap-in-place”), which provides a clear click and precise layer fixation.
The skewb measures 56×56×56 mm and weighs about 76–77 g — it is light, comfortable in the hand and doesn’t tire you out during long practice sessions.
Who is this skewb for
Level:
- complete beginner who is just getting acquainted with the skewb;
- kids and adults who want a proper beginner skewb, not a random “supermarket toy”;
- casual cubers who want to try a skewb with a “GAN-like” feel without paying extra for a flagship.
Age:
- approximately from 6–7 years and up;
- suitable for school-age children and adults — the 56 mm size is comfortable both for smaller kids’ hands and for average hands.
Main uses:
- first steps in skewb: learning basic algorithms and techniques;
- training logic, focus and spatial thinking;
- calm “off-screen” games at home or on the go;
- an inexpensive but quality gift for a child or a beginner cuber.
Turning feel
Monster Go Skewb turns smoothly and predictably, with a soft click:
- turns are light, and the speed is more than enough for a training-level puzzle, but without “crazy” acceleration;
- small plastic bumps fall into matching grooves, which creates a neat mechanical click and clear layer fixation;
- overall, it feels more like a soft, controllable skewb than an aggressive “racing” flagship.
This character is ideal for beginners and children:
the skewb doesn’t shoot out of your hands, you can clearly feel when the turn is finished, and it doesn’t scare you with excessive speed.
Fixation system (no magnets)
Monster Go Skewb is non-magnetic: there are no magnets inside to hold the layers.
Layer positioning is provided by a mechanical system of “bumps + grooves” and a ball-spring mechanism — you get a pleasant click without complicating the construction.
Tension adjustment:
- it uses GAN’s proprietary GES system — interchangeable nuts instead of standard springs;
- in the standard configuration, “green” GES nuts with medium stiffness are pre-installed;
- if you want, you can slightly tighten or loosen the tension by changing the nut position — tools are not always necessary, and the adjustment is quite simple.
The idea of Monster Go is a beginner-friendly mechanism without magnets and without complex tuning systems, but with a clear, clicky layer fixation.
Stability and corner-cutting
For a training skewb, Monster Go shows very decent stability:
- the clicky mechanism helps layers stop in the correct positions and reduces random misalignments;
- with careful turning, the skewb confidently “forgives” small underturns, doesn’t tend to fall apart and doesn’t lock up on every move;
- corner-cutting is not on the flagship level, but more than enough for learning and casual solving.
Overall, the model is tuned for control and predictability, not for extreme corner-cutting and record hunting.
Size, weight, materials
- Size: 56 × 56 × 56 mm — the standard for modern WCA puzzles.
- Weight: about 76–77 g — a light skewb, so your hand gets less tired during long training sessions.
- Material: safe ABS plastic with no strong odour, designed for use by children.
- Body: bright stickerless (coloured plastic without stickers) with a frosted, matte surface — nothing peels off, colours don’t wear out, and the skewb doesn’t slip out of your hands.
What’s in the box
Typically, in the box you get:
- the Monster Go Skewb;
- a branded Monster Go / GAN box (often in a simplified “light” packaging);
- a short leaflet or basic instruction sheet (usually in English/Chinese).
The skewb comes factory-lubed and pre-tensioned, so you can use it straight out of the box.
Key advantages
- Designed specifically for beginners and children — friendly in both speed and feel.
- Non-magnetic, but with a clear mechanical click-based fixation — easy to feel the layer position.
- Light and comfortable in the hand, suitable for long practice without heavy fatigue.
- Bright stickerless body: good colours, nothing peels or fades.
- Simple construction and understandable GES adjustment — you can easily tighten or loosen the tension a bit.
Who it might not be ideal for / nuances
- For those already used to magnetic skewbs and strong auto-alignment of layers, Monster Go Skewb may feel too simple and “ordinary” in terms of feedback.
- If the goal is serious record hunting and high-level competition performance, it will eventually make sense to move to more advanced magnetic models (for example, GAN Skewb M Core/Enhanced).
