GAN Skewb M Core Positioning — lightweight magnetic skewb with a magnetic core
GAN Skewb M in the Core Positioning version is a light (about 79–80 g) magnetic skewb with a magnetic core positioning system and GAN’s signature honeycomb geometry on the internal surfaces.
Magnets in the core and in the pieces help the layers self-align, while the matte stickerless body provides a secure grip and comfort during fast solves.
Who is this skewb for
Level:
- beginner speedcubers who have already tried a 3×3 and want their first serious skewb;
- casual and intermediate cubers who need a light, fast magnetic model for practice;
- also suitable for more advanced players as a main or backup competition skewb.
Age:
- school-age children and adults; the 56 mm size is comfortable for medium and larger hands.
Main uses:
- timed practice and participation in skewb competitions;
- moving from simple non-magnetic skewbs to an advanced level;
- an “everyday” skewb for those who solve a lot and like a light, fast feel.
Turning feel
GAN Skewb M Core Positioning feels fast, light and stable:
- the low weight makes the skewb very responsive — it accelerates easily with finger tricks;
- the turning is soft and smooth, without excessive “blockiness” or sandiness;
- magnetic core positioning gives a neat, not overly sharp “click” and helps the layers snap cleanly into place.
The honeycomb internal surface holds lube evenly and smooths the motion, so the skewb feels “buttery” but not gummy.
Overall, it’s a fast yet controllable skewb — comfortable both for learning and for high-TPS turning.
Magnets and adjustment
Magnetisation
- The Core Positioning version uses magnets in the core and in the pieces (a soft, “gently clicky” fixation).
- The magnets provide a pronounced but not excessive fixation: the layers tend to align by themselves, but the skewb doesn’t feel sticky or slowed down.
Adjustment (GES Pro)
- It uses the GES Pro system: dual adjustment of tension and elasticity.
- Several nut positions and elasticity levels let you tune the feel to your style — from looser and “floaty” to more tight and compact.
- Adjustment is done by “clicks”, without long, tedious screwdriver tuning.
The idea of this version is: take it out of the box and you can immediately solve comfortably, and if you wish, you can easily fine-tune the settings later.
Stability and corner-cutting (skewb)
In terms of stability, GAN Skewb M Core Positioning behaves like a modern flagship:
- effective corner-cutting (up to 90°) allows it to “forgive” noticeable underturns;
- magnetic core positioning improves auto-alignment of the layers and reduces the number of random lockups;
- internal tracks and rounded edges reduce friction and the risk of pops during fast turning.
As a result, the skewb remains solid, predictable and stable even with an aggressive turning style.
Size, weight, materials
- Size: 56 × 56 × 56 mm — classic size for modern WCA puzzles.
- Weight: about 79–80 g — one of the lightest magnetic skewbs; your hand gets less tired in long sessions.
- Body: bright stickerless (coloured plastic without stickers) with a matte finish — not slippery, resistant to small scratches and fading.
- Material: high-quality ABS plastic designed for long-term use.
What’s in the box
Typically, a GAN Skewb M Core Positioning set includes:
- GAN Skewb M (Core Positioning Edition);
- branded GAN box/case;
- documentation / setup guide for GES Pro.
The skewb is factory-lubed and pre-tensioned, so you can use it right away without any mandatory tuning.
Key advantages
- Lightweight magnetic skewb with magnetic core positioning — fast turning and confident auto-alignment.
- Soft, smooth turning feel with a neat magnetic click — comfortable for both beginners and advanced cubers.
- Flexible GES Pro adjustment system — you can tune tension and elasticity to match your style.
- Matte stickerless body with good grip and bright colours.
- Suitable both as a first serious skewb and as a main training/competition puzzle.
Who it might not be ideal for / nuances
- For those who like very strong magnetic fixation and a maximally sharp click, the Core Positioning version may feel too soft — in that case it makes sense to look at Enhanced Core Positioning (with stronger magnets).
- If you don’t want to deal with GES Pro adjustment, part of the model’s potential may remain unused — then simpler budget skewbs with basic screws might be a better fit.
- For a complete beginner who doesn’t yet solve a 3×3 confidently, this skewb might feel a bit “too fast” — sometimes it’s more logical to learn basic algorithms on simpler models first.
