YJ MGC Square-1 – Picube + edge + equator magnets — advanced Square-1 with extra edge and equator magnets
YJ MGC Square-1 – Picube + edge + equator magnets is an upgraded version of the popular YJ MGC Square-1, co-developed by YJ and Picube. On top of the standard MGC magnetic system, this configuration adds magnets in the edges and magnets in the equator layer, giving the puzzle noticeably more stability and control at high turning speeds.
The base MGC Square-1 is known for feeling lightweight yet very “planted” in the hand with buttery smooth inner and outer layers controlled by moderate magnets. The edge + equator magnets setup further improves layer alignment and makes this Square-1 especially suitable for advanced speedsolving.
Who is YJ MGC Square-1 – Picube + edge + equator magnets for
Skill level:
- intermediate solvers who already know how to solve Square-1 and want a more stable cube;
- advanced speedcubers drilling long CSP/PLL algorithms at high TPS;
- competitive cubers who care about stable turning and precise layer alignment.
Best suited for:
- daily practice and heavy algorithm training;
- preparing for and competing in official WCA Square-1 events;
- pushing your averages and PBs thanks to a more predictable, controlled turning feel.
Design and magnet system
- YJ MGC Square-1 core — a light Square-1 with a “planted” feel: most of the weight is centered, while the inner and outer layers turn smoothly with factory moderate magnets.
- Extra edge magnets — help the layers snap more accurately into place, reduce wandering and give a clearer, more confident click after each move.
- Equator magnets — strengthen the middle “ring” and improve stability during deep slice moves, making top–bottom layer swaps quicker and more reliable.
- Classic spring core (no MagLev) — familiar feel and straightforward adjustment via screws, without magnetic levitation of the core.
- MGC form factor — standard size and shape already well known to many cubers who use the MGC line.
Setup and feel
- Very smooth turning — layers move softly and evenly; you can fine-tune the speed further with lube and tensioning.
- Excellent control at high speed — the combination of edge and equator magnets reduces overshooting and unwanted extra clicks with aggressive turning.
- Competition-ready out of the box — comes with a thoughtfully designed magnetic layout; most cubers will only need light tension adjustments to match their style.
- Balanced speed and stability — fast enough for serious solves, but still very controllable and confidence-inspiring.
Who might not like it
- complete Square-1 beginners — a simpler budget model is usually enough for a first cube;
- cubers who prefer an ultra-light, almost non-magnetic feel;
- those looking for the absolute “maxed-out” version with MagLev and UV coating — that role is taken by higher-end Picube variants.
