QiYi Sail W — affordable training 3×3 for first solves and everyday practice
QiYi Sail W is an updated version of QiYi’s classic budget cube, the Sail. It’s non-magnetic, light and reasonably stable for its price range, making it a great choice for learning 3×3 and as a low-cost daily training cube.
Compared to many no-name supermarket cubes, the Sail W turns noticeably smoother and easier, locks up less and forgives common beginner mistakes, so you can focus on learning algorithms instead of fighting the mechanism.
Who is this cube for
Skill level:
- complete beginners just starting with 3×3;
- casual and entry-level cubers who don’t need an expensive flagship yet;
- schools, clubs, camps and workshops that need simple, reliable cubes for kids.
Age:
- children from about 6–7 years old with some adult supervision;
- school-age kids, teens and adults who want to see whether speedcubing is for them;
- a solid option as a family cube that everyone can share.
Main use cases:
- learning to solve a 3×3 for the first time with guides or video tutorials;
- regular beginner/intermediate practice and drilling basic algorithms;
- a simple “fidget” for home, school or travel;
- a spare cube in your bag or classroom that you won’t worry about wearing out.
Turning feel
- turning is light and reasonably fast for a budget cube;
- non-magnetic, “classic” feel — no magnetic click, pure mechanical feedback;
- after a bit of setup and lube, it becomes noticeably smoother;
- sound is moderately quiet, without harsh rattling — good for rooms and classrooms;
- ideal for calm, learning-focused solving and first timed attempts.
Overall, QiYi Sail W feels like a simple, beginner-friendly cube: fast enough not to hold you back, predictable enough not to be frustrating.
Stability and corner-cutting
- forward corner-cutting at a decent budget level — handles small misalignments well;
- reverse corner-cutting is modest but sufficient for neat, controlled turning;
- with reasonable tension the cube doesn’t fall apart or constantly “chew” layers;
- the design reduces the risk of pops under normal, non-aggressive turning.
Size, weight, materials
- Size: standard 3×3 (~56 mm), comfortable for both kids and adults;
- Weight: light, which helps reduce fatigue during long play sessions;
- Shell: solid budget plastic (available in stickered and stickerless variants);
- Surface: secure grip — not overly slippery in a normal hold.
Key advantages of QiYi Sail W
- very low price with much better turning than generic toy-shop cubes;
- excellent for first solves and teaching children;
- simple construction — easy to disassemble, lube and adjust if needed;
- great for schools, clubs and as a “workhorse” cube you don’t have to baby;
- a logical step before moving up to more expensive magnetic models.
Who it may not suit / nuances
- competition cubers used to top magnetic flagships with extreme corner-cutting;
- those who want a strong magnetic click and maximum stability at very high TPS;
- if you already solve 3×3 confidently and seriously chase PBs, a proper magnetic speedcube is a better main, and the Sail W works best as a training or backup cube.
QiYi Sail W is a great entry-level and training 3×3: inexpensive, easy to handle and good enough in quality to serve as a first cube or everyday practice workhorse for a long time.
