GAN Megaminx M — lightweight magnetic megaminx with 120 magnets
GAN Megaminx M is a magnetic megaminx weighing only about 113 g, roughly 15% lighter than most similar puzzles.
Inside there are 120 magnets and GAN’s signature honeycomb surface on the pieces, which makes the megaminx turn fast, smoothly, and still remain controllable even at high speed.
The frosted stickerless body with small finger indents improves grip and helps you hold the puzzle securely.
Who is this megaminx for
Level:
- beginners and intermediate cubers who already solve 3×3 confidently and want their first serious megaminx;
- casual cubers who want a proper, fast magnetic megaminx;
- advanced speedcubers — as a main or training megaminx.
Age:
- school-age children and adults; the size and shape are comfortable for medium and larger hands.
Main uses:
- moving from basic puzzles to larger and more complex ones;
- timed practice and participation in megaminx competitions;
- everyday solves “for fun” and developing spatial reasoning.
Turning feel
GAN Megaminx M feels light and “airy”:
- thanks to the low weight, the megaminx hardly tires your fingers even in long sessions;
- magnetisation along all edges gives a fast but controlled feel: turns accelerate easily with finger tricks and still lock into place cleanly;
- the honeycomb internal surface holds lube evenly and smooths out the motion — the turning becomes soft and “buttery”, without unnecessary roughness.
By character this is a fast, yet quite soft and predictable megaminx: it is not jerky, doesn’t try to fly out of your hands, and works well both for practice and for record attempts.
Magnets and adjustment
Magnetisation:
- around 120 magnetic capsules in the pieces — magnets are distributed throughout the whole megaminx and help the layers align cleanly;
- magnet strength is close to medium: the fixation is clear, but not excessively stiff — the layers tend to snap into place but don’t feel “sticky”.
Adjustment:
- it uses the standard GAN system with nuts/springs and honeycomb geometry;
- you can tune the tension to make the feel looser or tighter;
- the idea of the model: ready to use out of the box, with the possibility of light fine-tuning to match your style.
Stability and layer behaviour
For a large dodecahedral puzzle, stability is especially important — and here GAN Megaminx M performs confidently:
- good corner-cutting (up to ~42° forward and ~25° reverse according to the manufacturer) helps the megaminx “forgive” underturns and small misalignments;
- internal geometry with anti-pop and corner-twist protection noticeably reduces the risk of pieces popping out during fast solves;
- thanks to the many magnets, the layers wander less relative to each other, which is important in long megaminx algorithms.
As a result, the megaminx remains solid and predictable even with an aggressive turning style, as long as your technique is reasonably accurate.
Size, weight, materials
- Weight: about 113 g — roughly 15% lighter than most megaminxes on the market.
- Shape and size: a compact megaminx with a comfortable “finger fit” (around ~33 mm “per finger” along the diagonal of a face piece).
- Body: frosted stickerless — matte coloured plastic without stickers, resistant to small scratches and fading.
- Material: high-quality ABS plastic designed for long-term use.
What’s in the box
A typical GAN Megaminx M set includes:
- GAN Megaminx M;
- branded protective “GAN Ball” — a transparent spherical container;
- adjustment tool;
- branded box/case;
- instruction sheet and a GAN card.
Out of the box, the megaminx is already lubricated and set up — you can start solving right away and then slightly tweak the tension if you wish.
Key advantages
- Very lightweight megaminx — your fingers get less tired during long sessions.
- 120 magnets and honeycomb internals — fast, smooth and at the same time stable turning.
- Good corner-cutting and solid protection against pops and corner twists.
- Matte stickerless body with comfortable finger indents — excellent grip and good colour visibility.
- Suitable both as a first serious megaminx and as a main training/competition puzzle for advanced cubers.
Who it might not be ideal for / nuances
- For those who like heavier, more inertial megaminxes, GAN’s ultra-light body may feel too “airy”.
- If you want a fully “loaded” version with MagLev, ball core and multi-level adjustment systems, you should look at newer versions like GAN Megaminx V2 MagLev / Ball Core — they are more expensive and more complex to tune.
- For a complete beginner who is not yet comfortable with a 3×3, it’s better to master the classic cube first and only then move on to a megaminx — it’s quite a complex puzzle in terms of structure.
